The Work Experience Program consists of placing students in workstations within the community. The purpose of this activity is to familiarize students with the world of work and give them the opportunity to explore careers and to possibly open up opportunities for either apprenticeship programs or permanent placement. Supervision and evaluation is done by both the Work Experience Coordinator and the Workstation Supervisor.
This course offers an excellent opportunity to experience what a career would be like without waiting to obtain required prerequisites. Since this course is a cooperative effort between the school and community, there is an expectation for students to maintain a good work ethic and mature level of responsibility.
The following conditions apply:
Prerequisite: HCS 3000 must be completed before Work Experience credits are issued. May be taken concurrently with Work Experience. Can be used for Work Experience 35 Grade 12 requirements.
1. The program is recommended to students in Grade 11 and 12. Students may register in one or both Work Experience courses. A student who registers in a Work Experience course must work an average of 1.5 hours per day to a maximum of 6 hours per day (usually after school). The choice of the Work Experience activity is the responsibility of the student, with parent approval. The Work Experience Coordinator is responsible for the proper placement of students. This course relies heavily on independent student work. Students choosing to enroll in this course should be prepared to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.
2. Students may be required to have certain academic subjects before placement into work sites, which recommend completion of specific courses, (e.g. to work in a veterinarian clinic, students should have a background in high school science courses).
*No hours will be counted unless all paperwork is submitted*
RAP is a modified apprenticeship program that permits a high school student to register as an apprentice while attending high school. For more information refer to our Registration Guide.
