This course is designed for students with little or no previous French experience. The
basic language skills of comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking will be studied.
Prerequisite: None.
French 20-3Y
5 Credits
20-3Y broadens the previous introductory course by exploring in depth the
French culture and spoken language using authentic French written and media
resources. The primary focus will be on the students’ conversational and listening
skills. Writing in simple, correct French will also be an objective.
French Prerequisite: 60% in French 10-3Y.
French 10-9Y
5 Credits
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Grade 9
French. The language is taught through an action-oriented communicative approach in
a cultural context. Topics include Activities, Shopping, Vacations, and Fine Arts.
Prerequisite: 60% in Grade 9 French.
French 20-9Y
5 Credits
11 students who have successfully completed French 10-9Y
or equivalent. The four language skills are enhanced with activities at an advanced
level. Films and music will be used extensively.
This course is for Grade Prerequisite: 60% in French 10i or French 10-9Y, or equivalent.
French 30-3Y

Students learn how to communicate simply on a variety of topics useful when
travelling abroad. They will learn to express thoughts more naturally and more fluidly.
Students will gain increased cultural awareness of the Francophone world and the
many contributions of French-speaking people.
Prerequisite: 60% in French 20-3Y.
French 30-9Y
5 Credits
This course is for students who have successfully completed French 20-9Y.
Emphasis is on increased ability to understand and speak French, as well as read and
write with accuracy through structured and free composition. The themes of study
include World of Work, Travel and Tourism, Media and Conservation and the
Environment. Aspects of the Francophone world will be studied through literary
extracts, music and film.
Prerequisite: 60% in French 20-9Y.
French 31A

The goal of this course is to enhance all of the language skills: reading, writing,
speaking, and comprehension through the use of authentic documents. The class will
be taught exclusively in French. Students will discuss issues and topics, explore the
Francophone world, and learn advanced language skills (complex themes and
grammar).
Recommended Prerequisite: Grade 9 French Immersion.

A three-year Japanese language and culture program is offered for students with no prior Japanese language experience. Japanese 10-20-30 are comprehensive courses which
introduce students to the Japanese culture and the development of language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Japanese 10

Japanese is introduced through the study of various topics such as the individual,
family, food, housing, school, shopping, and transportation. Students learn to read and
write hiragana, a Japanese alphabet, and are introduced to other writing forms.
Students’ interests such as animation, origami, brush painting, and Japanese
traditional sports are also included in the program.

Japanese 20

This course continues to emphasize reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
The katakana alphabet is mastered and kanji are formally introduced. The Japanese
society of today is studied in detail. Topics such as land and people, customs, art and
literature, work, and living in Japan are explored.
Prerequisite: 60% in Japanese 10.
Japanese 30

In this course, students learn to express their opinions on a variety of topics, to talk on
the phone, and to write simple letters and compositions in Japanese. Kanji are studied
in more detail in order to increase vocabulary and understanding. Successful
completion of 30-level Japanese meets the admission requirements established by
most universities.
Prerequisite: 60% in Japanese 20.
Spanish 10

This academic course introduces students to the language and culture of more than
350 million people who speak Spanish on four continents. The primary focus is on
learning to speak with a standard Latin American accent while studying various
cultural components: the individual, family, travel and leisure, education and work.
Strong emphasis is placed on the acquisition of vocabulary and the mastery of verbs
to facilitate speaking and reading comprehension.

Students of Spanish 20 focus on improving their listening, speaking, and writing
abilities at an increasingly advanced level. More complex grammar and verb
structures are learned while studying the cultures of Spain and Latin America through
authentic reading materials and multimedia resources.

This course will offer a more in-depth look into the rich diversity of Spanish cultures by
studying aspects of the arts, music, technology, and entertainment. Hobbies, sports
and the environment will also be explored. Students will improve their speaking ability
so that they can carry on conversations with native speakers independently when
travelling within the Spanish-speaking world. Authentic Spanish reading materials will
be utilized. Successful completion of 30 level Spanish meets the admission
requirements established by most universities.
